Ashtami Tithi of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Mother Mahagauri. It is also known as Mahashtami or Durga Ashtami. On this day, there is a tradition of women offering Khoichha to Maa Durga. The nine nights dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga are called Navratri. According to religious beliefs, Goddess Durga appeared on Ashtami Tithi to destroy evil spirits. On the day of Maha Ashtami, women fill Maa Durga with Khoichha as per rituals. Actually, in states like Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, the ritual of filling Koichha is performed at the time of farewell of the daughter. When a married daughter leaves her maternal home to her husband’s house, i.e. while bidding farewell, the mother or sister-in-law gives something as a gift, like paddy or rice, turmeric, coins, flowers etc. It is called Koicha.

When their wishes are fulfilled, women fill Khoicha which contains betel leaves, betel nuts, sweets, rice, turmeric, Akshat etc. On this day, women do sixteen adornments of Mata Rani to fulfill her wishes. After this, Maa Durga was bid farewell. During this time, women tie makeup items in Chunari and offer them to Mother Goddess.
